What 6061-T6 aluminum plate is
6061 is a magnesium-and-silicon aluminum alloy with the best general-purpose balance of strength, machinability, weldability, and corrosion resistance. T6 is the temper — solution heat-treated and artificially aged to peak strength. Plate is the form for any application requiring flat stock thicker than 0.25", common thicknesses run 0.25", 0.375", 0.5", 0.75", 1", 1.5", 2", 3", and up. ASTM B209 is the controlling spec for plate; mill finish is standard but stocking distributors often carry custom-cut, deburred, and stress-relieved (T651) variants.
What to look for in a supplier
Decide up front whether you need T6 or T651 (stress-relieved). T651 has the same mechanical properties but lower residual stress — critical for parts that get heavily machined since T6 plate can deform unpredictably during stock removal. Confirm the supplier's plate is produced to ASTM B209 and ask about flatness tolerance (mill standard is fairly loose; a precision plate house can quote tighter). For larger plates, ask about cut tolerance and whether they sawn-cut, water-jet, or laser-cut — saw cuts are cheaper but require additional finishing.

What's the difference between 6061-T6 and 6061-T651?
Same alloy and same temper, but T651 has been mechanically stretched (typically 1.5-3%) to relieve residual stress from heat treatment. For machined parts where the workpiece distorts as stock is removed, T651 is the right call. For sheet-metal-style fab where the part stays mostly intact, T6 is fine.
What's the difference between 6061 and 7075?
7075 is significantly stronger (yield ~73 ksi vs. 6061's ~40 ksi) but less corrosion-resistant, harder to weld, and more expensive. 7075 belongs on aerospace structural, high-load tooling, and high-strength fixtures. 6061 covers everything else.
What's a reasonable lead time on 6061-T6 plate?
Common sizes and thicknesses ship in 1-5 days from stocking distributors. Oversize plate (>48"×144"), thicker than 4", or stress-relieved-and-saw-cut to specific dimensions runs 1-3 weeks.
What surface finish does 6061-T6 plate come in?
Standard mill finish is one-pass-rolled, slightly hazy, with mill markings. Polished, anodize-quality, and tooling-plate-grade (cast plate, fly-cut flat to ±0.005") are all available from specialty distributors at premium pricing.
