Hot Rolled Steel Plate Suppliers

102 vetted U.S. suppliers · 35 states

Hot rolled steel plate is the cost-engineered choice for structural fab and weldment work where surface finish doesn't drive the spec. Below is our live count of vetted U.S. suppliers carrying it, with state distribution and a one-click RFQ flow.

What hot rolled steel plate is

Hot rolled steel plate is produced by rolling at temperatures above the steel's recrystallization point (~1,700°F), giving a softer, more ductile final product with a characteristic mill-scale surface. The most common specs are ASTM A36 (structural), A572 Gr. 50 (higher-strength structural), and A516 Gr. 70 (pressure-vessel quality). Hot rolled is significantly cheaper than cold rolled and is preferred for any application where the scale surface will be welded, painted, or hidden.

What to look for in a supplier

Match the spec to the application: A36 for general structural, A572 Gr. 50 for higher-strength columns and beams, A516 Gr. 70 for pressure-vessel work. Surface condition options: mill-finish (cheapest, has scale), descaled (scale removed mechanically), or pickled-and-oiled (acid-cleaned and lightly oiled — ready for paint or coating). Cut capability matters: most service centers offer saw, plasma, oxy-fuel, water-jet, and increasingly laser cutting. For tight-tolerance work, ask about flatness — mill-standard is loose; precision-leveled plate is available at premium.

FAQ

Common questions

What's the difference between hot rolled and cold rolled steel plate?

Hot rolled is rolled hot (above ~1,700°F), giving a softer product with mill-scale surface. Cold rolled is finish-rolled at room temperature, giving tighter tolerance, smoother surface, and slightly higher strength — at significantly higher cost. For structural and general fab where surface doesn't matter, hot rolled is the right call.

Is hot rolled steel plate weldable?

Yes — most hot rolled structural plate (A36, A572) is fully weldable with standard rod/wire. Pre-heat is generally not required for plate up to ~1.5" thick at room temperature; thicker sections or cold-weather welding may need pre-heat per AWS D1.1.

What does "pickled and oiled" mean?

Pickled-and-oiled (P&O) plate has been chemically cleaned (typically in hydrochloric acid) to remove mill scale, then lightly oiled to prevent flash rust during transit. P&O surface is ready for paint, primer, or coating with minimal additional prep — saves blast time downstream.

What thicknesses does hot rolled plate come in?

Standard stocked range: 0.1875" through 4" in standard increments. Thicker plate (6", 8", 12") is available but usually mill-order with longer lead times. Sheet (below 0.1875") is a separate stocking category and is typically cold rolled.
