What industrial U-bolts are

U-bolts are bent threaded rod in a U-shape with two ends threaded for nuts and washers — used to clamp around pipes, cables, structural sections, and tubes. Common materials: carbon steel (zinc-plated or hot-dip galvanized), 304/316 stainless. Bend types: square (90° corners) for structural-tube clamping, round (curved bend) for pipe and conduit, semi-round for muffler and exhaust work. Sizing is by inside dimension (ID), thread diameter, and leg length.

What to look for in a supplier

Match the bend to the application: square U-bolts for square tubing and structural sections, round U-bolts for round pipe and cable, semi-round for exhaust and muffler clamps. Material: carbon-steel zinc-plated for indoor/protected use, hot-dip galvanized for outdoor/buried, stainless for marine/chemical. Size matters: confirm whether you're spec'ing by tube/pipe OD, ID of the U-bolt loop, or thread diameter — these differ. Most suppliers carry standard sizes (¼" through 1" thread, common pipe sizes); custom bends with non-standard ID, leg length, or material are available at premium with longer lead time.

FAQ

Common questions

What's the difference between a square and round U-bolt?

Square U-bolts have 90° corners with straight legs — used to clamp square tubing, beams, and structural sections. Round U-bolts have a continuous curved bend — used for round pipe, conduit, and cable. Semi-round is the third common type — designed specifically for exhaust and muffler clamping where the U conforms to the outside of a round tube.

How are U-bolts sized?

Three dimensions matter: thread diameter (the bolt diameter — typical sizes ¼", 5⁄16", ⅜", ½", ⅝", ¾", 1"), inside dimension (the loop ID — must match the OD of what you're clamping plus clearance), and thread length (leg length above the bend — must accommodate the part being clamped plus nut and washer). All three need to be on the PO.

What finish should I spec for outdoor U-bolts?

Hot-dip galvanized (HDG) is the standard for outdoor and buried use — thick zinc coating, decades of corrosion protection. Mechanically galvanized is a thinner alternative with slightly lower corrosion resistance but tighter dimensional fit. For marine or chemical exposure, 316 stainless is the right call.

Can U-bolts be custom-made?

Yes — most U-bolt manufacturers will quote custom bends with non-standard ID, leg length, thread, or material. Lead time is typically 2-4 weeks beyond standard stock, and minimum order quantities apply (often 100+ pieces for custom bends).
